Did You Know ? . . . .
1987 Federal Mandate making it illegal to ‘dump' used oil.
1991 Ca. Oil Recycling Enhancement Act creates an incentive program (.16/gal.)
1 gallon of illegally dumped used oil can contaminate 1 MILLION GALLONS of WATER…a years supply for 50 people!
Used oil accounts for 40% of the total oil pollution of our nations harbors and waterways.
1/3 the energy is required to re-refine used oil to lubricant quality oil than to refine crude oil to lube oil.
To produce 2.5 quarts of lubricating oil it takes 42 gallons of crude oil, but only one gallon of used oil.
Used oil, when re-refined, can be recycled over and over again without losing its lubricating quality. After re-refining, 60-70% of the oil is nearly identical to newly refined oil and, after adding the appropriate additives (fulfilling API Standards), can be used as lubricating oil. The remaining oil can be used as fuel oil and asphalt extender.
In the U.S. approx. 42 million gallons of used oil is poured down drains or sewers or on the ground and an additional 52 million gallons are illegally disposed of in the trash. Compare this to the 10 million gallons of crude spilled by the Exxon Valdez in Alaska in 1989, or the 150 million gallons of crude spilled in the Persian Gulf in 1991.
Oil recycling can help reduce dependency on foreign Oil
Only approx. 60% of used oil is being recycled.
